A sea change to a paradise known as Kangaroo Island in July 2020 has prompted me to nominate for a position on Council. As a visitor to the Island over the past 22 years I have seen the Island grow from an unknown haven to a thriving tourist destination. I am currently enjoying my new challenge as Owner/Operator of the American River Post Office and General Store where I have been sincerely welcomed by locals, seasonal and first- time visitors. Home is now in American River where I have found fabulous people, great food, and magnificent scenery. Although being relatively new to the Island as a resident, I believe I can contribute to the commitment of the council to move forward and make serviceable improvements whilst maintaining the tranquil grandeur of the island. I am a semi-retired urban planner and passionate Islander with broad life experience. My professional experience includes two decades working with local government, big and small. That work involves developing and managing policy and projects that add real value to peoples lives. As a local, I've enjoyed the privilege of working with our highly motivated KI community to improve the local place and access experience. I am a CFS volunteer. I've worked closely with the Penneshaw Progress Association to draft the '2040 Vision' document - see website https://davidmepham.wordpress.com. As a Councillor, I will work constructively with Council, business, and the community to build on those things we do well and exploit the opportunities to do better. I will work to add value and resilience to our economy and enhance the highly respected 'KI' brand, while protecting the natural and lifestyle qualities that make KI that place we call home.
