City of Adelaide - Area Councillor

Due to the resignation of a member of the Council, a supplementary election is necessary to fill the vacancy of Area Councillor for the City of Adelaide.

Update 20 July 2021

In line with the current SA Health direction:

  • Electors are no longer able to personally deliver their completed voting material to the Council office and place it in the ballot box there. The only way to vote is to send it via post, and we encourage electors to do so immediately. Please note that ECSA must receive it no later than 12 noon Monday 26 July 2021. 
  • Any person who intended to place their completed voting material in the ballot box at the Council Office can instead place it in a red Australia Post post box in the city by 4pm on Friday 23 July 2021 and be assured it will be received in time to be counted.
  • The scrutiny and count previously scheduled for Wednesday 28 July 2021 will be postponed, meaning that the announcement of the successful candidate will be delayed. More information about the timing of the scrutiny and count will be provided as soon as possible.

The voters roll for this supplementary election closed at 5pm on Friday 30 April 2021. 


At the close of nominations at 12 noon on Thursday 10 June 2021, a total of 7 nominations were accepted for the supplementary election. The draw for ballot paper order was conducted at 4pm at Adelaide Town Hall. The candidates' names in the order they will appear on the ballot paper are:

Candidate briefing session

An in-person briefing session for intending candidates was held at 1pm on Thursday 20 May 2021 at the Queen Adelaide Room, Adelaide Town Hall 128 King William Street, Adelaide.

Mail-out of voting packs

Voting packs were mailed to electors between Tuesday 6 July 2021 and Monday 12 July 2021. To be accepted, ballot papers must be completed, inserted in the signed declaration envelope provided and mailed to be received by the Returning Officer no later than 12 noon, Monday 26 July 2021.

In line with SA Health advice, electors are not able to drop off their completed voting material at the Council office as planned. The only way for you to vote is to mail it. If you have not yet posted your voting material we strongly encourage you post it immediately, noting it must be received by ECSA no later than 12 noon, Monday 26 July 2021.

Scrutiny and count

The scrutiny and count previously scheduled for 28 July 2021 will be postponed, meaning that the announcement of the successful candidate will be delayed. More information about the timing of the scrutiny and count will be provided as soon as possible.


To appoint a scrutineer, a candidate must complete the approved form, and hand it to the Deputy Returning Officer or Electoral Officer in charge of the proceedings at the scrutiny and count.

Note that:

  • a candidate may appoint one or more scrutineers, however only two may be present at the same time during the counting of votes
  • a candidate in an election for the council (including a candidate who has already been declared elected) is not eligible for appointment as a scrutineer.
