Voting

To voting in the 2024 SA First Nations Voice Election, you:

  • must be a First Nations person
  • must be enrolled on the State electoral roll

Based on community feedback, and to make sure there is local representation, eligible electors will be voting for candidates within the Voice region they are enrolled to vote in. 

Voting in the 2024 SA First Nations Voice Election is not compulsory and there are no fines or penalties for not voting.

  • Roll closed at 5:00 pm on 12 February 2024
  • Nominations closed at 5:00 pm on Monday, 12 February 2024.
Rules for the SA First Nations Voice to Parliament Election

The Electoral Commissioner has made the SA First Nations Voice to Parliament Election Rules, determined under the First Nations Voice Act 2023.

The Election Rules help set out all the things that need to happen under this law, which includes the election and all parts of its process, information about nomination and voting, and what happens during the election and scrutiny and count processes.

Declaration of nominations

Eligible candidates who have nominated for the election were announced and the draw for positions on the ballot paper was conducted at 12 noon on Monday, 26 February 2024. The results were published at savoiceelection.sa.gov.au/voting/candidates.

Background to the election

In 2023, the South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament was established.

The SA First Nations Voice will be made up of community members, elected by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in South Australia, to represent their communities and provide advice on laws, policies, and programs through direct line of communication with key decision-makers. This will enable more informed and inclusive decision-making about the issues that matter most to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities.

The SA First Nations Voice to Parliament Election is the process for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in South Australia to elect these representatives.
