Students across South Australia continue to actively engage in civics and democracy through hands-on learning experiences, with a highlight recently being Modbury High School's Year 7 Learning Expedition Election.

Their election marked the culmination of months of learning, research and community engagement. Students proudly shared their work with families and community members, drawing on fieldwork conducted at Tea Tree Plaza to inform their campaign platforms and election speeches.
The event attracted strong community participation, with students, families and representatives from federal, state and local government all taking part in the voting process. The Minister for Education was also among those who cast a ballot. In a testament to the quality of the students' campaigns, all six candidates received an even distribution of first-preference votes.
Following the preference count, congratulations went to the Generation Green Party, which emerged as the winning party.
Adding to the authentic election atmosphere, students involved in the school's ski trip fundraiser operated a barbecue throughout the event, ensuring attendees could enjoy a traditional democracy sausage while participating in the electoral process.
Civics in the City Program Update
Meanwhile, students from Settlers Farm, Spalding, Watervale, Snowtown, Brinkworth, Booborowie and Stansbury visited Parliament House as part of the Civics in the City program. The experience provided students with valuable insights into the parliamentary process and the role of democratic institutions in South Australia.
Over the past 18 months, ECSA's electoral education programs, delivered in partnership with Parliament and regional education initiatives, have reached students across a broad range of metropolitan, regional and remote communities. Participating districts have included Adelaide, Bragg, Chaffey, Cheltenham, Elder, Elizabeth, Enfield, Finniss, Flinders, Frome/Ngadjuri, Gibson, Giles, Hammond, Heysen, Hurtle Vale, Kaurna, Kavel, King, MacKillop, Mawson, Mount Gambier, Narungga, Newland, Ramsay, Reynell, Schubert, Stuart, Torrens, Unley and West Torrens.
These experiences continue to provide young people with meaningful opportunities to engage with democratic processes, develop civic knowledge and build the skills needed to participate confidently in their communities and Australia's democracy.
