History

This district was created at the 1991 boundaries redistribution effective 1993.

Name origin: Mary Colton (1822-1898) arrived in Adelaide in 1839 and worked for the welfare of women and children. Associated with many organisations helping poor city mothers, orphaned and neglected children, and the sight, speech and hearing impaired. Mary Colton was a founder of the Adelaide Children's Hospital and President of the Women's Suffrage League which campaigned for equal voting rights for women which were granted in 1894.

Size: Approximately 15.5 km²

Location: Situated to the west of Adelaide, includes the seaside suburbs of Henley Beach and Henley Beach South with the River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri outlet forming a section of the southern boundary.

Key boundary changes compared to 2010: Gains part of the suburb of Lockleys.
