Youth Parliament

Youth Parliament South Australia concluded last Friday at Parliament House with the Electoral Commission SA as a key sponsor.

The Electoral Commission is a keen advocate of youth participation in the democratic process.

Participants spent the week in Parliament House debating mock bills and voting on them. Topics included mining, indigenous issues and political reform.

Representatives from the Electoral Commission SA were present to witness the opening of the session. The first debate focused on lowering the voting age to 16. Both sides debated well, but in the end the mock Bill was defeated. Electoral Commission staff were impressed by the enthusiasm of the young people taking part in the program.
