History

This district was created at the 1969 redistribution and first represented in 1970.

Name origin:
Sir William Mitchell (1861-1962) was Professor of English Language, Literature and Mental and Moral Philosophy at the University of Adelaide from 1894 - 1922, Vice-Chancellor 1916 - 1942 and Chancellor 1942 - 1948.

Size: Approximately 26.8 km²

Location: South-west of the Adelaide city area this largely residential area is bounded by Main South Road in the east.

Key boundary changes compared to 2010:
Mitchell loses the remainder of the suburb of Marion.
